Wayne Coyne, founding and seminal member of The Flaming Lips, is a man out on another trip. This of course is a compliment, as Coyne happens to be endowed with a sense of creativity and professionalism that does not apply to the average musician or, for the sake of cliché terminology, artist. Begun in 2001, this fall season has finally seen the long-awaited release of Christmas On Mars, a psychedelic sci-fi film written, produced and scored by The Lips with Coyne at the helm. Destined for campy-but-not-too-campy cult status, Mars has enjoyed success with independent theatres across the country. Synthesis recently spoke with the elegant Coyne while kicking back at his Oklahoma City residence.

Yankovic received his first accordion lesson a day before his seventh birthday, and since his first-aired song parody in 1979 has sold more than 12 million albums (more than any comedy act in history), recorded more than 150 parody and original songs, and has performed more than 1,000 live shows. His works have earned him three Grammy Awards among nine nominations, four gold records, and six platinum records in the United States. Some may know Fred Mascherino as the former singer/guitarist of Taking Back Sunday; others know him for the power-pop splendor of his new project, the Color Fred. However, those really in the know wear his signature under the soles of their feet. Fred’s Macbeth signature Studio Project, the Fred Mascherino F.P. Mascho, was designed to suit Fred’s daily needs and core values: a completely vegan shoe (i.e., no leather or other animal products used in its construction/testing) with Velcro straps and extra padding in all the places a person needs. Fred recently dispensed a bit of beardly wisdom about his custom footwear.

The Connecticut natives have risen “literally from people’s backyards” to touring with metal deities Slayer, headlining the second stage of the holy grail of all metal tours, Ozzfest, playing several sold out headlining tours of their own, and even has their lead singer, the ever accommodating and articulate Jamey Jasta, hosting Headbangers Ball on MTV2 for all the world to see. In short, one of the most popular bands in all of metal is actually a hardcore band, and it’s their sincere dedication and connection to those roots that makes Hatebreed one of those bands that isn’t necessarily listened to by everybody, but one that is most certainly respected by everybody.

Buzz Osborne (b. 1964), also known as King Buzzo, (birth name Roger Osborne) is the guitarist/vocalist/songwriter and technically the only remaining founding member of The Melvins. (Drummer Dale Crover is often regarded as a founding member, but he joined after the band was formed, though before they had yet recorded an album.) Buzz Osborne is also a founding member/guitarist for both Fantômas and Venomous Concept.

Synthesis editor Ryan Prado had the glorious opportunity to chat with the group outside the Omni Hotel in beautiful downtown Austin, Texas, during South By Southwest 2008. The Sword’s Age of Winters hit me like a sort of metal epiphany. I still haven’t recovered from the shock. My wardrobe got blacker, the art of Boris Vallejo started to look cool again, and I had fantasies about a buying a big Ford Econoline van so I could get a dragon painted on the side and take bong hits in the back.

That was just a fantasy, though.

With Gods of the Earth, The Sword are back even heavier than before, and with songs like Mother, Maiden, Crone and The Frost Giant’s Daughter, their songs have even more of a mythic scope. Gods of the Earth came out yesterday, and if you haven’t gotten it already, you’re slipping. Either way, you can hear me and The Sword’s drummer Trivett Wingo shoot the shit for a while in this here interview.

Nada Surf’s history as a band is in some ways a story of survival. Founding members Matthew Caws (guitar, vocals) and Daniel Lorca (bass) began the group in Brooklyn circa 1993. Moderate success was found early on within the alternative scene, but not until linking with drummer Ira Elliot in 1995 did the band hit stride. Upon connecting with former Cars member Ric Ocasek in Southern California, Nada Surf was able to negotiate a contract with Elektra and proceeded to release their 1996 debut, High/Low. In a matter of months the trio was riding the wave of a runaway hit with “Popular,” though mainstream success proved to be fleeting as Elektra refused to release Nada Surf’s second offering without a true single. The group was eventually dropped, and spent two years fighting to release The Proximity Effect independently. Nada Surf did however get the last laugh — the group maintained a large fanbase and has released four additional full lengths,including their shiny new LP, Lucky. Nada Surf has been represented by Barsuk Records since 2003, and is currently on the brink of three months worth of American and European touring. Jake Sprecher of Synthesis caught up with frontman Matthew Caws in anticipation of their stop in Sacramento.

Mike Patton has been in a couple bands throughout his career. Most notably Faith No More from 1988 to 1998.
He has also handled lead vocals for Mr. Bungle, Tomahawk, Lovage, Fantômas, The Dillinger Escape Plan, and Peeping Tom.
Recently he has lent his voice to characters in The Darkness video game and the Will Smith movie, I Am Legend.
His latest project was to craft the soundtrack to the Derrick Scocchera film, A Perfect Place. The album drops on March 11th, 2008 on Ipecac Recordings.

Call him what you want so long as you say it with respect. As the creator of a very special and unique brand of funk,
George Clinton’s stamp on both past and present rock ‘n’ roll and hip-hop is indisputable.
His work with the groups Funkadelic and Parliament have transcended all things groove within a rock medium,
yielding a laundry list of super hits and making him one of the most sampled artists in musical history,
second only to James Brown.
At 67 years old, Clinton and the gang are still up to the same old tricks; out on tour with new records coming down the pipe.

Sons and Daughters, February, 2008

Sons and Daughters is famous for unique electro-indie rock that incorporates rockabilly, punk, blues and basically whatever else they are inspired by. Their new release, This Gift, is a testament to their quirky talent. With a new producer, the album is a remarkable improvement from past releases, offering a crisper, more eclectic sound with brighter vocals. “Darling” is probably the most danceable jam so far to come from Sons and Daughters, while “Rebel With The Ghost” mixes Motown with dirty garage rock. Unfortunately, the album is brought down by the dull repetitiveness of “The Bell,” and “Goodbye Service” seems to have a lack of cohesion and drive. Nonetheless, it is a strong album and the best so far to come from Sons and Daughters.

There’s a new sheriff in town. And by sheriff, I mean editorial circus master/mob boss.
And by town I mean Issue #9 of Synthesis Digital. James Barone has left the building.
Actually he’s sitting right next to me, but he’s doing something way more important…running the show over at www.synthesis.net,
our newly redesigned homepage from which you very well might have downloaded this here document. So in his place, you get me: Daniel Taylor.
You might remember me from such epic blog posts as “Pitchfork Media Can Suck My Cock” or as the bassist in hugely famous rock ‘n’ roll band Surrogate (album out now on Tooth and Nail Records).
But since none of that shit actually pays my phone bill, here I am, wrangling content and pwning bands.
Loyal readers may also notice it’s been a minute since the last edition of Synthesis Digital. And for that I take full responsibility.
Reading the interview with Circa Survive’s Anthony Green compelled me to take a DMT-fueled vision quest, searching for the answer to life’s ultimate question. This, of course, took a little time. But I’m back, and I’ve brought the answer with me.
I’d tell you what it is, but that wouldn’t be any fun now would it? Instead, I’ve encrypted it within the text of this issue of Synthesis Digital.
So make sure to read every interview—from Mike Kieran’s chat with Every Time I Die frontman Keith Buckley to Harland Spinks’ (yes that’s his real name) talk with former Hot Water Music frontman Chuck Ragan—very, very carefully.
There are also clues hidden in the images—check Mike Z’s photo of cover artist and hip-hop sav Musab—as well as the ads peppered throughout.
So click every link. Toil over every word. Read and reread every sentence, every title. It’s all there. IT’S ALL RIGHT THERE. You just have to figure it out, man.
