I am sitting in the Synthesis Office on a lovely Friday afternoon and have the urge to make another locally-based podcast. It has been almost a year since we stopped the I <3 Chicobands podcasts and the more I think about it - I ask "Why?"

Alfred Matthew “Weird Al” Yankovic (born October 23, 1959) is a Grammy-award winning American singer, musician, actor, satirist, parodist, songwriter, music producer, accordionist, and television producer. Yankovic is known in particular for his humorous songs that make light of popular culture and that often parody specific songs by contemporary musical acts. Yankovic received his first accordion lesson a day before his seventh birthday, and since his first-aired song parody in 1979 has sold more than 12 million albums (more than any comedy act in history), recorded more than 150 parody and original songs, and has performed more than 1,000 live shows. His works have earned him three Grammy Awards among nine nominations, four gold records, and six platinum records in the United States. Yankovic’s first top ten Billboard album and single were both released in 2006, nearly three decades into his career.

Over the next eight months, Red Bull Big Tune will embark on its second national tour traveling the U.S. in search of the producer with the next “Big Tune.” Beat makers and sound providers can apply online to compete in regional battles in Philadelphia, Oakland, Houston, Chicago, Detroit, Seattle, Washington, D.C. and Los Angeles.

Big Tune began as the brainchild of DJ/producer/emcee–Vitamin D and Hip Hop visionary/event producer –Jonathan Moore, in 2004 with the purpose of bringing emerging and established talent to the forefront. After three years of hosting thriving local battles in Seattle, they forged a creative partnership with Red Bull and the event evolved beyond a beat battle into a dynamic national producer program.

Perennial American indie/folk-ers the Silver Jews will mark June 17th with the release of their sixth full-length record, Lookout Mountain, Lookout Sea. David Berman is up to his usual tricks, spurting imaginative poetry that wraps beauty and sorrow around the everyday doldrums (”Suffering Jukebox”) , waxing whimsical fantasies (”Candy Jail”), as well as spinning good and long yarns (”San Francisco B.C.”). Berman’s wife Cassie is featured prominently on Lookout…, lending an undeniable female warmth to the feel of the record. The Joos are even touring for the occasion, with a current stint in Europe.

Some may know Fred Mascherino as the former singer/guitarist of Taking Back Sunday; others know him for the power-pop splendor of his new project, the Color Fred. However, those really in the know wear his signature under the soles of their feet. Fred’s Macbeth signature Studio Project, the Fred Mascherino F.P. Mascho, was designed to suit Fred’s daily needs and core values: a completely vegan shoe (i.e., no leather or other animal products used in its construction/testing) with Velcro straps and extra padding in all the places a person needs. Fred recently dispensed a bit of beardly wisdom about his custom footwear.

Hatebreed is no stranger to success. The Connecticut natives have risen “literally from people’s backyards” to touring with metal deities Slayer, headlining the second stage of the holy grail of all metal tours, Ozzfest, playing several sold out headlining tours of their own, and even has their lead singer, the ever accommodating and articulate Jamey Jasta, hosting Headbangers Ball on MTV2 for all the world to see. In short, one of the most popular bands in all of metal is actually a hardcore band, and it’s their sincere dedication and connection to those roots that makes Hatebreed one of those bands that isn’t necessarily listened to by everybody, but one that is most certainly respected by everybody.

Cayle Hunter speaks with Jamey Jasta of Hatebreed before the Chico show- June 2008.

Buzz Osborne (b. 1964), also known as King Buzzo, (birth name Roger Osborne) is the guitarist/vocalist/songwriter and technically the only remaining founding member of The Melvins. (Drummer Dale Crover is often regarded as a founding member, but he joined after the band was formed, though before they had yet recorded an album.) Buzz Osborne is also a founding member/guitarist for both Fantômas and Venomous Concept.

New York City’s Heloise and the Savoir Faire have enjoyed a whirlwind ascension to the peak of the dance-punk scene in 2008. With the impending release of their debut album, Trash, Rats and Microphones, and a major push by both Elijah Wood (via his label Simian Records) and the addition of guest vocals on the new album by Debbie Harry, the group seems unstoppable. Synthesis editor Ryan Prado had the glorious opportunity to chat with the group outside the Omni Hotel in beautiful downtown Austin, Texas, during South By Southwest 2008. What follows is as succinct an interview as you can expect considering that all five members of the band grappled over one measly digital recorder. Rest assured, it looked as great as it sounds…

The Sword’s Age of Winters hit me like a sort of metal epiphany. I still haven’t recovered from the shock. My wardrobe got blacker, the art of Boris Vallejo started to look cool again, and I had fantasies about a buying a big Ford Econoline van so I could get a dragon painted on the side and take bong hits in the back.

That was just a fantasy, though.

With Gods of the Earth, The Sword are back even heavier than before, and with songs like Mother, Maiden, Crone and The Frost Giant’s Daughter, their songs have even more of a mythic scope. Gods of the Earth came out yesterday, and if you haven’t gotten it already, you’re slipping. Either way, you can hear me and The Sword’s drummer Trivett Wingo shoot the shit for a while in this here interview.

PRETTY & NICE are the four horsemen of pop doom. The glitchy pop quadrangle formed 3 years ago between Burlington, VT and Boston. The group currently resides in a yellow house in Boston preparing to emerge and destroy your life with catchy hooks and bad irony. James Barone of Synthesis.net met up with the guys at this yeats SXSW in Austin, Texas. James didn’t really go into the interview with a gameplan - so the conversation took on a life of its’ own. Nada Surf’s history as a band is in some ways a story of survival. Founding members Matthew Caws (guitar, vocals) and Daniel Lorca (bass) began the group in Brooklyn circa 1993. Moderate success was found early on within the alternative scene, but not until linking with drummer Ira Elliot in 1995 did the band hit stride. Upon connecting with former Cars member Ric Ocasek in Southern California, Nada Surf was able to negotiate a contract with Elektra and proceeded to release their 1996 debut, High/Low. In a matter of months the trio was riding the wave of a runaway hit with “Popular,” though mainstream success proved to be fleeting as Elektra refused to release Nada Surf’s second offering without a true single. The group was eventually dropped, and spent two years fighting to release The Proximity Effect independently. Nada Surf did however get the last laugh — the group maintained a large fanbase and has released four additional full lengths,including their shiny new LP, Lucky. Nada Surf has been represented by Barsuk Records since 2003, and is currently on the brink of three months worth of American and European touring. Jake Sprecher of Synthesis caught up with frontman Matthew Caws in anticipation of their stop in Sacramento.
